Watershed Technician
Starting Wage – $18 per hour
Work season begins in May to Aug. Extensions depend on funding
This position is subject to funding availability and the conditions associated with that funding.
Watershed Field Technicians duties will be as follows:
Fieldwork & Monitoring:
- Water Quality Monitoring:
- Collect water samples from various locations (streams, lakes, wetlands)
- Maintain accurate records of data collected
- Biological Monitoring:
- Assist with benthic macroinvertebrate surveys
- Observe and document wildlife sightings
- Habitat Assessments:
- Assess riparian areas (vegetation, erosion, bank stability)
- Assess stream crossings (roads, culverts, bridges)
- Data Collection & Entry:
- Utilize GPS units and other data collection tools
- Enter data into databases and spreadsheets
Restoration & Enhancement:
- Planting Projects:
- Assist in the planting of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers
- Prepare planting sites and maintain plantings
- Keep a record of where planting takes place
- Stream Restoration:
- Participate in stream bank stabilization projects (brush mats)
- Assist with the installation of fish passage structures
- Remove debris and invasive species from waterways
- Habitat Improvement:
- Create and maintain wildlife habitat features (e.g., bird nesting boxes, bat houses)
Outreach & Education:
- Public Presentations:
- Assist with educational workshops and presentations
- Assist with the development of educational materials (brochures, fact sheets)
- Participate in community events and festivals
- Landowner Outreach:
- Assist with providing technical assistance and advice to landowners on best management practices
- Conduct site visits and develop stewardship plans
- Volunteer Coordination:
- Help recruit and manage volunteers for watershed restoration projects
Other:
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintain and repair field equipment (e.g., water sampling equipment, GPS units)
- Ensure proper storage and safety of equipment
- Report Writing:
- Prepare technical reports and grant proposals
- Summarize project findings and present results to stakeholders
Important Notes:
- This list is not exhaustive and may vary depending on the specific work plan and project requirements.
- Watershed Technicians often work outdoors in various weather conditions and may be required to lift heavy objects.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are essential.
Assistant Project Manager
Starting wage: $19/hr
This position is subject to funding availability and the conditions associated with that funding.
Work begins in May till August, with a possible extension.
Position Summary:
Tignish Watershed Management Group is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Watershed Project Manager Assistant to support the implementation of various watershed restoration and protection projects. The Assistant will work closely with the Watershed Coordinator and other team members to achieve project goals, engage with stakeholders, and contribute to the overall success of the organization’s watershed initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Support:
- Assist in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of watershed restoration projects, including stream bank stabilization, riparian buffer plantings, and wetland restoration.
- Conduct field surveys, collect data, and prepare project reports.
- Assist with the preparation of grant proposals and applications.
- Track project budgets and expenditures.
- Coordinate with contractors, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
- Outreach & Education:
- Assist with the development and delivery of public education programs, workshops, and presentations.
- Develop and distribute educational materials (brochures, fact sheets, etc.).
- Participate in community events and outreach activities.
- Build and maintain relationships with landowners, community groups, and other stakeholders.
- Data Management:
- Enter and manage project data in databases and spreadsheets.
- Generate maps and reports using GIS software (if applicable).
- Analyze data and prepare presentations of project findings.
- Administrative Support:
- Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling meetings, managing correspondence, and maintaining project files.
Qualifications:
- Education in Environmental Studies an Asset
- Strong interest in watershed ecology and restoration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Experience with outdoor fieldwork and data collection is an asset.
