The Tignish Watershed Management Group is a non profit group that provides watershed enhancement, education, riparian zone diversity to our watersheds.
There are 25 watershed groups across Prince Edward Island. Each Watershed group is connected under the PEI WATERSHED ALLIANCE. You can find more information on the PEI Watershed Alliance here.
Each year we are out in the streams and rivers working hard to remove blockages which can cause silt buildup and make it impossible for brook trout to swim upstream to spawn. Our crew starts by assessing an area, then creates a plan. In an area where there is an abundance of silt buildup, brush mats are placed to capture silt. They will also look at buffer zones to see if more native trees need to planted in order to capture run offs from land. In areas where there is a loss of coverage to the stream, native trees and shrubs would be planted. Coverage for streams is important to keep the water cool and provide hiding places for aquatic life.
And it’s not all about the fish! In order to have a thriving watershed, we must look at all wildlife that live within the area.
